We are currently delivering a third year of nature programming to the Haggerty Preschool in West Cambridge (2018-19), are in our second year at the Peabody School's integrated Special Start preschool classroom, and hope to introduce a third program to another district preschool this Fall.
CELP follows the model inspired by a unique collaboration between the Friends of Fresh Pond and the Haggerty Preschool, one of Cambridge's seven city-run preschools. Through a generous grant from the MIT/Harvard COOP in late 2016, they paired a nature educator with the class to explore the local environment, including observing neighborhood wildlife and flora, experiments with seeds and schoolyard plantings, as well as excursions to the nearby Fresh Pond Reservation.
These nature programs are tailored to the green spaces proximate to schools, and include immersive outings to rich urban wilds such as Alewife Brook Reservation, Mt. Auburn Cemetery, and Fresh Pond Reservation. Classes are taught by both independent nature educators as well as faculty and students of Lesley University's WonderLab.
